October is sometimes referred to as the “bear killer” because it has marked the bottom for many bear markets. Based on the past 12 years of sector ETF data, Staples XLP, Materials XLB and Technology XLK have been the best performing sectors while Utilities XLU, Healthcare XLV and Telecom TTH have been the worst performing sectors.
