September seasonality

September has historically been the worst performing month for stocks. Below is a performance report of buying $10,000 worth of the S&P 500 etf (SPY) at the open on the first trade day of September then selling at the close on the last trade day of September. Over the past 23 years the S&P has been down -.41% for the month of September.

This seasonal study will be updated each month.

 

 

Below is a spreadsheet that shows how each one of the S&P 500 stocks have performed for the Month of September. The spreadsheet is sorted by highest to lowest average trade. Each trade is based on a $10,000 investment. To determine the Average percentage price change of a stock divide the average trade size by 10,000.
